Year Abroad Program

Program Description
This scholarship supports semester and year long Polish language studies with funding from the Polish Ministry of Education and Sports and the Kosciuszko Foundation. Studies take place at the Center of Polish Language and Culture in the World, Jagiellonian University, Cracow during academic year 2008-2009. The Scholarship includes acceptance to the program, a tuition waiver and a stipend for housing and living expenses. Airfare to and from Poland is not included.

Eligibility
US citizens and permanent residents of Polish descent who are undergraduate sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students and who have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Selection Criteria
Selection is based on academic excellence, motivation for pursuing Polish studies, interest in Polish subjects and involvement in the Polish American community.

Application Procedure

  • Applications forms are available from October through December 30.
  • Deadline is on or before Tuesday, January 15, 2008.
    Kosciuszko Foundation's application instructions are slightly different than the instructions on the application form. Follow all directions listed here.
  • Submit a non-refundable application fee of $50 and all supporting materials to the Kosciuszko Foundation, 15 East 65th Street, New York, NY 10065. Please note our new zip code. Submit all documents in one complete packet, not seperately, on or before the deadline date.
  • Complete the Polish Ministry of National Education application entitled Bureau for Academic Recognition and International Exchange. The application appears in four languages. Use the English portion of the application - your responses must be in English. Submit two copies of the application. Type or print your full name on each page of the application.
  • In Question 15 complete the line "Other" by indicating Year Abroad Program, Jagiellonian University, Center for Polish Langauge and Culture in the World
  • In Question 16 complete the line "Scholarship of the Government of the Republic of Poland" by indicating "Tuition waiver and stipend for housing and living expenses"
  • In response to question 21, indicate whether you intend to participate in the 1st semester, 2nd semester or Full Academic Year.
  • In response to Question 22, provide a well-reasoned essay (minimum 2 pages) detailing your reasons for applying to the program. Include your academic and career goals. Include your name, Year Abroad Program and a page number in the upper right hand corner of each page provided. Submit two copies of your essay.
  • Attach copies of transcripts inclusive of Summer 2007 and any relevant certificates or diplomas related to Polish language courses/classes you have taken.
  • Attach 2 letters of recommendation from professors. Recommendation letters should be in sealed envelopes and signed across the seal of the envelope.
  • Attach 2 passport-size photos with your name printed on the reverse. Photos are used for publication purposes.

Scholarship Results: All applicants are notified in writing in June 2008.
